Instagram Filters

Introduction

Businesses and different corporations advertise so many different images in different parts of the 

world and almost, of not all, are edited in some way. Most of the things that we see on a daily basis 

are social media posts like things on snapchat, instagram or VSCO. These filters used in posts are 

used to alter the picture in a very different way than it started out as. With brighter colors and 

different contrast points I tried my hand at filtering some pictures that I took in my dorm room.

How Did I Get This Filter?

For the filter on my pictures i didn't want to go one hundred percent crazy I just wanted to photos to 

look like they've been edited. First I adjusted the brightness of the picture to .34. Then I moved the 

saturation to .13 to the edges are more crisp. After that I wanted to also move the contrast to .16 so 

that the colors popped a little bit more than they already were. To finish it off I changed the exposure 

to lighten up the photos and bring out the white.

What I Learned

Editing these pictures have given me more perspective on what can actually be done with photos to 

make them look more official. The RGB graph is something that I though would overdue it on these 

photos but watching the videos and experiencing working with it in class gives me the knowledge for 

future projects and to make all of my content better overall.

Reflections
There are millions of pictures in the world taken every second, but not everyone knows what to look for. Working for the shot is a key element into capturing the perfect photo. Taking a picture of the same things from different angles, different distances, or even different times in the day could make the biggest difference of how people portray your photos. Using layers, negative space, lines, symmetry and angles, I set out to capture a regular mirror and add some aesthetic to it.

Angles

In this shot I took a picture of one of my friends from a far distance to show an angle of a mirror that most people would never see normally. It was a little more interesting than just a far away mirror.

Symmetry

Symmetry is used here by the way that the mirror is displayed perfectly in the middle of four drawers. The drawers have a place in the middle of the picture where they meet perfectly above the mirror which is the main focus.

Framing

I thought that for this one I would crop the picture so that the mirror was perfectly framed in the picture. There are some things happening in the background but they are not distractions because of what is happening in the mirror.

Negative Space

There is not a lot going on in this picture except for the mirror on the left part of the picture. I think that not having the mirror directly in the middle creates more space visually in the whole picture. Having shadows coming from places off to the side adds somewhat of a mystery element.

Lines

For this one i used the mirror to display a different pattern of lines from the shades behind. I think it looks really cool and also adds some depth that previously was only at the bottom of the picture. The only thing that is different about this picture is that there are some photos randomly thrown onto the left side of the mirror.

There are so many times throughout the day where we look at ourselves weather it be through our phones or walking by our reflection. There is a certain point where people have to take a second and really look at the reflection that is looking back at them.
